Our Story
In 2022, the Texas State Board of Education invited content experts, educators, and community members to revamp all K-12 Social Studies curriculum.
From United States History to Ethnic Studies, Texans came together to revise academic standards in response to the state’s growing diversity and evolving educational demands.
Seizing this critical moment, Asian Texans for Justice formed the Learn Our Stories coalition. Building upon the advocacy laid by Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color, Learn Our Stories championed two goals at the State Board of Education:
✔
Implement Asian American contributions & history
in K-12 standards
✔
Approve an
Asian American Studies
high school elective course
AUGUST 1, 2022
Over a hundred students, parents, and allies mobilized at the State Board of Education in support of Asian American Studies and the newly revised K-12 standards.
The community’s unprecedented show of support demonstrated that Asian American stories belong in Texas classrooms.
Overwhelmed by the community’s mobilization and the upcoming mid-term election, the State Board of Education delayed the approval of the new K-12 standards to 2025 and suggested that our coalition pursue the “innovative course” pathway. Amidst the political climate, the K-12 Asian American Studies movement was born — a movement to Learn Our Stories.
